Why Does My Anus Itch?

There are many uncomfortable and embarrassing itches to have, but the one that is the most uncomfortable and embarrassing is anal itching. There is no way to scratch that itch in a discrete way. It is also very difficult to satisfy the itch.

Many people who anal itching also suffer from hemorrhoids. These are more common than most people think as almost all adults experience them at some point in their lives. Hemorrhoids are small vessels in the anus and when you push too hard to excrete, they will burst or extend out of the body. When they extend out of the body, this is when they begin to itch.

Recovering from a Stretch

Anal itching can also occur after you have spent too much time pushing and your anus has to recover from a big stretch. If you find that your anus itches too frequently, it is a good idea to see your doctor who can try to determine what is causing the anal itching. She will most likely have to do an exam to determine if you have a hemorrhoid or not, unless they are protruding from the body. Your doctor might also want you to see a specialist who can perform a more thorough exam and will know the area a bit better.

You might also get a colonoscopy to see whether or not you have any polyps in your colon that could be creating the problems that are causing you anal itching. Many insurance companies will cover these, especially if you are over a certain age or if you have a history of colon cancer in your family.

Skin Problem

Anal itching could also happen if you are not taking proper care of your skin. If you do not wipe well and you have a build-up of feces on your bottom, you could have irritation on the skin around your anus. This is similar to diaper rash and you can even use a diaper rash cream to help cure the itch and heal your skin. You should be sure to always wipe properly so that you do not irritate your skin and cause an itch.

If you do feel the need to itch, you need to fight it. The skin around the anus is sensitive and if you have a rash, you could irritate the sores and become prone to infection. If the area around your anus gets infected, you can expect a long healing time and a lot of discomfort. Plus, it can be a bit embarrassing.

If you feel like you need itch and you are at home, one of the best ways to handle the discomfort is to make a Sitz bath. You can do this in a few ways. The easiest way to do this is to draw a low bath in your tub and simply sit with your anus covered with warm, soothing water. Some people like to use baking soda. Otherwise, there are small baths you can buy that are designed just for sitting and healing, too.
